Accept the unexpected
The whole team was let go.
In the morning we were working on specs.
In the afternoon we received the doom calls.
We had been working on building a new business line for a year and a half. We were preparing to ramp up. And out of nowhere, issues totally unrelated to our work killed it in a matter of days.
It’s like sprinting and hitting an invisible wall.
End of the race.
You can go home.
Minus a few teeth.
What can you do in that type of situation?
You can be angry. That’s legit.
But it won’t change anything.
You can scream how unfair it is. That’s legit.
But it won’t change anything.
You can worry. That’s legit.
But it won’t change anything either.
The only thing you can do is accept the unexpected.
I can’t change what happened. There is nothing in the world I could have done to prevent it from happening.
If I resist, I bathe myself in acid. Stupid, but I’ve noticed I’ve done that quite a few times in my life, to say the least.
The question that matters here is:
What can I do?
Spend time with my kids.
Do the work around the house.
Look for the next challenge at work.
Let this be in the past and move on.
That’s obvious, but it can’t be done if I stay attached to what happened.
And these thick ropes can be cut by one thing only:
Acceptance.
